What is a Doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional & physical support before, during and for a short period after childbirth. Doulas do not take the place of loved ones, but are there to help the birthing person have the best birth experience they can while supporting their choices during birth.
Having a doula at your birth can help reduce anxiety, discomfort and pain. Your doula will encourage you and help you to know what's normal, what questions you can ask and how to prepare for the birth process.
When you request a doula, they will meet with you before your birth 1-2 times for information and birth preparation. They will then meet you at the hospital for continuous support until your baby is born, staying for up 2-3 hours after birth. Once you're home your doula will visit you and your baby to talk about your birth and listen to your birth story- how it went for you. They may still be available for continual emotional support and/or connect you with a postpartum doula for some extra support.
